Noahs Ark and other boats

This meme or one like has recently been floating around on the secular and atheistic blogsites and FaceBook pages. It came across mine and a comment was made: Not many will like this one; it is rather controversial, however honest, brutal and logical it actually is.

Controversial, not really. Sad though in that it perpetuates misinformation back to those who are already misinformed. As far as Christians (the target group) are concerned, they know the facts and would not be bothered by this meme. Honest, not particularly- only if by honest means you wish to present only a portion of the facts. I call that deception. Brutal- well the Bible does describe some of God’s disciplining of his children in manners that some choose to describe as ‘brutal.’ Logical, well only on the surface. Once you begin to understand the full picture, then the logical fallacy of the statement becomes apparent. I will explain.

I will attempt to assist you in attaining a fair-minded state of mind mentioned above. To answer the questioned posed in the first meme: yes, a lot of people had a lot of boats. Now, where does the fallacy come in? Most of civilization (with a few exceptions, not necessary to go into at this point) at the time of Noah’s flood lived near water: an oceanfront, lakefront, riverfront, pools of water or hand dug wells somewhere. Most of these people fished or carried goods up and down the rivers, across the lakes, and sailed portions of the oceans (although no trans-oceanic crossings had been recorded at this time). There was a wide variety of rafts, skiffs, canoes, sampans, barges, ferries, longboats, etc. that was in use by various civilizations at the time of the Great Flood.

What we do not know is how hard it rained for 40 days and 40 nights, but there are probably some accurate speculations we can make. I live in west Texas and there have been several times it has rained so hard, I literally could not see more than 30 feet outside. Once my rain gauge registered 2 ½ inches of rain in an hour. We have all seen videos of flash floods washing out bridges, roads. These floods have occurred after days of rain all around the world, in mountainous areas, desert areas, wooded areas and delta areas. Everywhere basically.

What viable conclusions can we draw from this plausible speculation? Now after 40 days of rain, one could expect most of those living in low-lying areas, along river streams, along lakeshores, ocean shores etc. may have perished. All of the possible individuals who could get into or on a floating device did so. As more and more of the land disappeared, those who were hanging on to limbs, rafts, etc. probably also died from exposure near the 40 days and nights. Without any substantial food stored on board the larger floating craft, it is not known how long the individuals would have survived eating what they could catch. The volume of water would have undoubtedly diluted the number of fish that could be caught per square mile, assuming that large schools of fish were not covered with silt from the rocks and dirt flushed down by the floods. (Some archeological sites show massive amounts of fossilized fish, all swimming in the same direction. Whoops, sorry about letting that little reported, but well-known fact slip in.)

Well, let us talk a little more about the facts by studying the history of the flood recorded in Genesis 7:4 to 8:16. In brief it goes like this: It rained for 40 days and 40 nights, and the fountains of the deep were opened up: that is what caused the whole earth to be flooded. And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man. The waters of the flood started to go down, and the ark rested on the mountains after 5 months had passed. And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen. So that would make the flood about 7 1/2 months long before the mountains could be seen. Notice that THE FACE of the ground was dry, that is, there was NO STANDING WATER seen. This would have been about the 10 1/2 month point since the flood began, but the ground was still soggy, and so God did not tell them to leave the ark until a little later. So once the flood started, until the time when the ground was truly dry again, it was 1 year and 10 days. That is the total length of the flood, 1 year and 10 days from entering the Ark to leaving the Ark.

Now, we have to go a little bit into geology. Whether you are a young earth biblical or secular (yes there are some) scientist or believer by faith or an old age biblical (yes there are some) or secular scientist or believer by faith, certain facts lead to certain assumptions.   We will discuss some of them now.

Geological column: The geological column is the theoretical classification system for the layers of rocks and fossils that make up the Earth’s crust. Fossiliferous layers can often be traced across entire continents and correlated with rocks in other countries. The full sequence of layers was compiled following the study and correlation of rock layers on many continents, and was largely based on the interpretation that layers of sedimentary rock formed over millions and even billions of years at uniform geologic rates.

Geologists have associated layers of rocks with sequence of events thought to have occurred over hundreds of millions of years. For example, it is believed that during a particular episode the land surface was raised in one part of the world to form high plateaus and mountain ranges. After the uplift of the land, the forces of erosion attacked the highlands and the eroded rock debris was transported and redeposited in the lowlands. During the same interval of time in another part of the world, the land surface subsided and was covered by the seas. With the sinking of the land surface, sediments were deposited on the ocean floor. Such recurring events as mountain building and sea encroachment and believed to be recorded in rock layers that comprise units of geologic time.

Quiz time: Can you detect the logical fallacy in the above Wikipedia statement?  I have to be careful here and keep on track because I could write several hundred thousand words. I will not even start with the assumption of “sedimentary rock formed over millions and even billions of years.” We will let that stand-alone. However, the fallacy comes in the entire second paragraph. Notice it is talking about two entirely different events happening (presumably on opposite sides of the earth) at the same time. Then they state in the first paragraph “Fossiliferous layers can often be traced across entire continents and correlated with rocks in other countries.”  HOW?

This would create entirely different sediments, entirely different animals becoming fossilized in entirely different methods (pressure under water, buried under rock debris). I would imagine the sudden sinking of the land would be quick while the erosion would take considerably longer. Yet they would consider both of these events as part of a uniform geologic rate.  It is also kind of interesting when the remarkably ‘intelligent’ and ‘all-knowing’ scientists can’t explain anomalies in the geologic column they then use the ‘theory of localized’ flooding. No explanation as to how the flood occurred, how it was contained within that particular area and what happened after the supposed flood.

Plate tectonics is a scientific theory that describes the large-scale motion of Earth’s lithosphere. This theoretical model builds on the concept of continental drift which was developed during the first few decades of the 20th century. The geoscientific community accepted the theory after the concepts of seafloor spreading were later developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Just about every secular and biblical scientist involved in paleontology and geology believes at one time the earth had one gigantic landmass as shown in (a) above, variously known as Pangaea or Gowanda.  Plate tectonics ‘experts’ say that Pangaea broke up and over millions of years the continents were formed and various plants and animals found in one area can be found on another continent (in some form or another due to speciation and natural selection).

Let us go back to part of Genesis listed above “the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.” With all the rain coming down and massive holes in the landmass opening up and water coming out it is entirely possible that created the breakup of the continent and caused the parts to shift around the globe. At the same time it would create massive waves that you generally see in the movies and various memes (not so much in the one above, though). Now we can go back to the other people who were in larger boats and had hopes of surviving this massive rain cycle. I am sure they felt like the boat skipper in the movie “The Perfect Storm,” and I would hazard a guess that most if not all of them collapsed in the extreme waves. The only boat built to withstand that sort of storm was Noah’s Ark. And that is how and why only the individuals and animals on the Ark were available to resettle the world.

Now about the points mentioned above about the meme:

I have probably made the discussion a little more controversial than just the meme itself.

I believe I have honestly pointed out both sides of the ‘controversy’ even though I have occasionally editorialized (hey, it is my blog and I can if I want to).

Yes, our Lord, God Almighty can be brutal to those who willfully choose to not believe in Him.

Logic can be as illogical as you want it to be. Too often our, esteemed scientists, create correlations and try to prove them as causality. I’ve demonstrated this several times and have added another one at:

Everybody seems to have their own thoughts on how and why these events occurred. As a Christian, I have no need to wonder. All I need to do is keep current with the changing science and apply my knowledge to the facts. Because I live by faith, that I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior I can be certain that when I die, in the twinkling of an eye, I will come to know and understand the truth. I can say that with certainty as well as all biblical scientists. The secular scientists however will always wonder.

Here is to thinking, an activity done best without personal prejudices or preconceived notions.
